  • The width rule: The diameter of your lampshade should be roughly equal to the height of the lamp base (measured from the very bottom of the base up to the start of the metal light socket).
  • The height rule: The height of the lampshade should be approximately 2/3 (two-thirds) of the height of the lamp base.
  • The coverage rule: Your lampshade should always be wide enough to completely hide the internal electrical hardware (the socket and switch) from view when you are sitting next to it.Example: If your table lamp base is 30 cm (approx. 12 inches) tall, your ideal drum lampshade should have a diameter of roughly 30 cm (12 inches) and a height of about 20 cm (8 inches).

2. For floor lamps (The statement scale)

Floor lamps require a grander, more architectural presence.

  • Standard floor lamps generally look best with a drum lampshade that has a diameter of 40 cm (16 inches) or 50 cm (20 inches).

  • Fits 40mm (EU) or 28mm (UK with ring)  

1. The US Standard: Spider / Harp Fitting

If you are ordering from the United States, your lamp base most likely utilizes a Harp system. A harp is a vertical metal wire frame that arches over the light bulb.How it works: The lampshade has a small central ring at the very top with three or four metal arms extending outward (like a spider web). This central ring sits on top of the harp and is secured in place by screwing a decorative cap (Finial) onto the thread.LAMPARiOMA Note: Simply specify "US Fitting" at checkout, and we will construct your shade with the correct top-set spider washer.

2. The EU & UK Standard: UNO / Slip Uno FittingIf you are ordering from Europe or the United Kingdom, your lamp base will utilize a socket-ring system.

How it works: The lampshade features a large metal ring at the bottom (for table lamps) or top (for hanging ceiling pendants). You remove the plastic threaded ring from your lamp socket, slide the lampshade ring over the socket, and screw the plastic ring back on to lock it securely in place.LAMPARiOMA Note: Our European fittings come with a built-in removable adapter ring. It fits standard European sockets (40mm) as well as smaller British standard sockets (28mm).
